Butt Weld Elbows by Material

Stainless Steel Elbows

Stainless steel elbows in ASTM A403 WP304L — for lines where corrosion resistance or a clean, uncoated bore rules out carbon steel. One catalogue listing states the pattern: Elbow 90 RL, A403 WP304L, Sch 10S, ASME B16.9. Further stainless grades are confirmed per product at enquiry.

The material logic of stainless butt weld elbows differs from carbon steel. The L grades (304L, 316L) limit carbon so the heat-affected zone of the weld keeps its corrosion resistance without post-weld treatment — which is why most process orders specify L grades by default. Grade 316 and 316L add molybdenum for chloride-bearing service; 321 is stabilised for sustained elevated temperatures.

Stainless schedules carry an S suffix (5S, 10S, 40S, 80S), and the S-series walls are their own series — some sizes differ from the carbon schedules of the same number, so check the wall against the B36.19 table for the size in question. Always state the schedule with the S, or give the wall thickness, so the elbow bore matches your pipe exactly.

Why Stainless Is Finished Differently

Carbon steel fittings are painted because they rust in storage. Stainless fittings are usually supplied unpainted — the corrosion resistance is the point of the material, and a coating would hide the surface the buyer is paying for. The finish for a specific product is confirmed at enquiry: if your order needs a stated surface finish or a protective packing arrangement, name it on the enquiry so it is confirmed at quotation.

Where Stainless Elbows Are Specified

Chemical and petrochemical process lines, food and beverage plants, pharmaceutical utilities, water treatment, pulp and paper, and marine systems — services with corrosive media, washdown regimes or product-purity requirements. For the wider family beyond elbows, see our stainless steel pipe fittings page.

Ordering Notes

State grade in full (WP304L, not just 304), schedule with the S suffix, and whether the elbow is seamless or welded construction. On larger sizes welded construction is common; the construction for a specific product is confirmed at enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

304L or 316L — which stainless elbow grade do I need?

304L covers most water, food and general chemical service. Choose 316L where chlorides are present — coastal plants, seawater-adjacent lines, many chemical processes — because its molybdenum content resists pitting. If the medium is named on your enquiry, we can confirm the grade against it.

Why do stainless schedules have an S suffix?

Schedules 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S are the stainless wall series in ASME B36.19; some sizes differ in thickness from the carbon steel schedules of the same number in ASME B36.10, so check the B36.19 table for the size in question rather than assuming the carbon wall. Writing the S on the order prevents a wall mismatch at the weld.

Are your stainless elbows painted or coated?

Unpainted is the usual finish for A403 material; the exact surface finish for a specific product is confirmed at enquiry.

Seamless or welded stainless elbows — does it matter?

Seamless elbows are formed from seamless pipe and carry no weld seam; welded elbows are formed from welded pipe or plate and suit larger sizes and lighter duties. State a preference on the enquiry if your specification names one construction, and the construction will be confirmed for the specific product.
